This week, we are looking at Acer’s fledging attempt at a tablet - the Acer Iconia Tab A100 and Apple's iPad 2. The devices vary differently from their operating systems and their physical design. They come in very different sizes - the 9.7-inch Apple iPad 2 which is designed like a magazine, compared to the 7-inch Acer Iconia Tab A100, which is shaped like a thick novel.
Speaking of thick, the Apple iPad 2 is much thinner at 8.8mm meanwhile the Acer Iconia Tab A100 is possibly one of the thickest tablets out there at 13.1mm. However, the Acer Iconia Tab A100 is 143 grams lighter than the 613 grams of the Apple iPad 2 (3G + WiFi).
The Apple iPad 2 displays at 1024 x 768 pixels on a 9.7-inch screen, compared to 1024 x 600 pixels on the 7-inch Acer Iconia Tab A100. We don’t expect too much difference, but the Apple iPad 2 benefits from a bigger screen, giving you a better viewing experience.
Under the hood, the Apple iPad 2 is powered by a 1GHz A5 dual-core processor, coupled with 512MB of RAM. On the Acer Iconia Tab A100, it comes with an Nvidia Tegra dual-core 1GHZ processor and 512MB RAM. So we don’t expect too much difference performance wise.
There are three internal storage options for the Apple iPad 2, offering either 16GB or 32GB or 64GB internal storage, with no external storage options. The Acer Iconia Tab A100 comes with an internal storage of 8GB and an expandable microSD that supports up to 32GB.
Cameras are a staple for tablets these days, so we got a decent 5-megapixel camera and a 2-megapixel front facing camera on the Acer Iconia Tab A100, compared to Apple iPad 2’s 0.7-megapixel rear camera and the VGA front facing camera for FaceTime. Having tried out the Apple iPad 2's imager, we can expect higher quality photos from the Acer Iconia Tab A100.
The Acer Iconia Tab A100 is a WiFi only tablet. Meanwhile, Apple iPad 2 is able to support HSDPA up to 14.4Mbps downlink and WiFi connectivity. Both devices have no voice call or SMS functionality, but share features like Bluetooth 2.1, gyroscope, accelerometer and a compass.
Both tablets are powered by different operating systems, the Apple iPad 2 comes with the iOS 4.3, and has the latest Nitro Java Script engine in Safari that speeds up web browsing experience and allow users to assign the side button either as an orientation lock or mute button. In comparison, the Acer Iconia Tab A100 comes with the tablet optimised Android 3.0 (Honeycomb), with the homescreen revamped for landscape screen support. Honeycomb also has a dedicated multitasking tab to easier manage your system resources.
So which one should you get? Acer is relatively new to the tablet game, but they managed to churn out a high-end tablet with great features and come with lower price point. Choosing the Acer Iconia Tab A100 will net you the Android Honeycomb operating system, better cameras, and dual-core performance.
That being said, we will recommend the Apple iPad 2 despite its higher price point when compared to the Acer Iconia Tab A100. Apple's tablet is a proven device, and is powered by the equally matured iOS. It comes with a simple, user-friendly design, and we enjoyed the clear, crisp display it offers.
